Contractor information

The State of Minnesota requires licenses for residential building contractors or remodelers, roofing contractors, plumbers, and electricians. A bond is required for mechanical contractors. The city has no licensing requirements, but the building department verifies state licensing requirements.

Visit the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry website for more information.

Exceptions to licensing requirements

  • A building owner is not required to be licensed to personally perform any general construction work not involving plumbing, mechanical, gas fitting, electrical, or fire suppression systems when such work is in connection with the owner's building, or their portion of a building.
  • A homeowner may do plumbing and electrical work in their residence without a license.
